Peru, former president Alberto Fujimori has been released from prison
He was serving 25 years for crimes against humanity. The decision once again divides the Andean country over the controversial caseFormer Peruvian President Alberto Fujimori , sentenced to 25 years in prison for crimes against humanity, was released from prison today due to his state of health after the Constitutional Court approved a resolution in favor of his release.
The decision once again divides the Andean country over the controversial case.
The former head of state (1990-2009), 85 years old, of Japanese origins but nicknamed "el Chino", the Chinese, has served 16 of the 25 years of sentence inflicted on him because he instigated the crimes of murder and serious injury to damages of the victims of the Barrios Altos and La Cantuta cases , classified as crimes against humanity under international criminal law .
In 2017 Fujimori managed to obtain a pardon from the then president Pedro Pablo Kuczynski, but the execution of that sentence was paralyzed by a precautionary measure from the ICHR, the Inter-American Court of Human Rights.
Last year the Peruvian Constitutional Court decided to restore the effects of that pardon which, after various judicial events, was finally applied.
