More than 1,500 residents of the Tarifa area (Cadiz), in the far south of Spain, were evacuated this morning due to the forest fire that broke out in the area yesterday afternoon, Andalusia's Interior Minister, Antonio Sanz, told Radio Cadena Ser.
Added to these people is an unspecified number of guests from various hotels and campsites, who were also evacuated as a precaution, the councilor added. "Yesterday, we had to evacuate thousands of cars from various beaches. It was a very complicated, very dangerous situation. The operation was completed in record time," Sanz explained.
Throughout the night and into the early hours of this morning, firefighters attempted to contain the blaze. "Today will be a long and complicated day," the councilor stated, adding that the strong winds are one of the most difficult factors to manage. In addition to the fire in Tarifa, there is another blaze raging in Galicia, in the Ponteceso area (A Coruña), where the Military Emergency Unit (UME) is also working.
