A magnitude 7.7 earthquake has struck Burma, with its epicenter 16 km northwest of Saigang, in the center of the country. The US Geological Survey, Usgs, reported. For now, the confirmed death toll is 25, but it is feared that the number is destined to rise.

The tremor reached Thailand: a 30-story skyscraper under construction collapsed in Bangkok, leaving at least 43 workers missing under the rubble. The earthquake was also felt in the southwestern Chinese province of Yunnan.

The shock – according to the data – had a magnitude 300 times greater than that of the 2016 Amatrice earthquake and 8 times greater than the highest ever recorded in Italy, which was 7.1 in the 1908 event in Messina. "There is no risk of tsunamis since the earthquake occurred about 300 kilometers from the coast - explained Salvatore Stramondo, research director of the National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology - but when there are shocks of this intensity in mountainous areas there is the possibility that landslides are triggered and that the ground liquefaction occurs, with possible impact on infrastructures".
