Chernobyl: Russian drone strikes nuclear storage area. IAEA: "These attacks are unacceptable."
Damage and radiation levels "within established limits," the International Atomic Energy Agency: "Deep concern."In the Chernobyl area, a Russian drone struck a building inside the spent nuclear fuel storage facility overnight, starting a fire, according to the Ukrainian state nuclear power company Energoatom.
Ukraine informed the International Atomic Energy Agency that, on X, it reported that Kiev spoke of an attack that “caused significant damage to the plant’s fuel reception building – including to the facade, windows and doors – and nearby buildings were also hit by the blast wave,” but “radiation levels at the plant remain within established limits.”
According to Energoatom, around 2:10 a.m. Kiev time, a Russian drone attacked the site of the centralized spent nuclear fuel storage facility, partially destroying the container reception building. Energoatom clarified that the damaged building did not store spent nuclear fuel.
The IAEA reports that its team will soon visit the site to inspect the damage.
Director General Rafael Grossi said the incident "is a source of deep concern as it occurred in a facility containing large quantities of nuclear material, stored just meters from the attacked building." "Attacks on nuclear sites are completely unacceptable and in direct violation of the fundamental principles of nuclear safety, particularly the seven pillars essential for nuclear safety during a military conflict," Grossi said.
