Pope Francis in Canada to meet indigenous peoples victims of assimilation policies and abuses perpetrated in government residential schools , largely run by the Catholic Church .

Bergoglio landed on Sunday in Edmonton , the capital of the western province of Alberta and, after the meetings in the Vatican between March and April, he decided to bring his closeness, his pain and his "mea culpa" for the abuses directly to the territories concerned and the communities involved.

"Dear brothers and sisters of Canada, I come among you to meet the indigenous peoples. I hope that, with the grace of God, my penitential pilgrimage can contribute to the path of reconciliation already undertaken. Please accompany me with prayer", the message of the Holy Father on departure.
