The United States has halted some arms deliveries to Ukraine, including anti-aircraft missiles, the White House said, confirming press reports and expressing concern over the depletion of its ammunition stockpiles.
“This decision was made to put American interests first, following a Department of Defense review of our country’s military assistance to other countries around the world,” White House Deputy Press Secretary Anna Kelly said.
This news comes as Russian attacks in Ukraine intensify and is causing considerable concern for Kiev, which has summoned the US chargé d'affaires.
“Any delay or postponement” in U.S. weapons deliveries to Kiev would “encourage” Russia to continue its invasion, the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry said. Presidential adviser Dmytro Lytvyn, stressing the “crucial importance” of U.S. military supplies, said he was waiting for concrete information from Washington.
"The fewer weapons are supplied to Kiev, the closer the end of the conflict," Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov commented on the news of the suspension of part of American military aid to Ukraine. "From what we understand, the reason for this decision is empty warehouses, a shortage of armaments in warehouses," Peskov said. "In any case, the fewer weapons are supplied to Ukraine, the closer the end of the war," he added.
