At least four people have died and 23 have been rescued after a ferry carrying 65 people sank while en route to the Indonesian island of Bali.

The toll of the accident was updated by local police after a rescue agency initially reported 61 people missing.

The vessel reportedly sank around 11.20pm local time, probably due to bad weather, with waves over two metres high and strong winds and currents that slowed down rescue operations.
