Aung San Suu Kyi under house arrest. The Burmese democratic leader, Nobel Peace Prize winner in 1991 and detained after the military coup that overthrew her government in 2021, was transferred from prison to be placed under house arrest but it is not known where.

Apparently, this is a measure adopted due to a strong heat wave that hit Burma. “Given that the weather is extremely hot, not only for Aung San Suu Kyi (but) for all those who need the necessary precautions, we are working to protect especially older prisoners from heatstroke,” the junta spokesman said military in power, General Zaw Min Tun. According to several sources, former president Win Myint, who is 72 years old, is also believed to have been transferred. However, General Zaw Min Tun did not specify where.

Suu Kyi is 78 years old and has been suffering from health problems for some time. For a total of 15 years she was kept under house arrest even under the previous junta. She was then confined to her family's former colonial-style residence on Yangon's Inya Lake. From there, even while she was detained she gave speeches to her supporters who crowded at the gates. So it is very unlikely that she will be moved into that home.

According to some opponents, the transfer was ordered by the junta in power to try to appear less severe. Just today it was also announced that 3,300 prisoners will be freed as part of an amnesty to celebrate the Burmese New Year holiday. But the fact remains that temperatures in the capital Naypyidaw, where Suu Kyi is believed to be held, will reach 41 degrees in the next few days and is expected to rise further next week.
