29 people have died in Burma following an army attack on a camp for displaced people in the north of the country.

“We found 29 bodies, including those of children and the elderly, and another 56 people were injured,” said Naw Bu of the Kachin Independence Army (KIA).

Investigations are underway to understand the origin of the attack, which occurred yesterday around 11pm local time in a field near Laiza, not far from the Chinese border.

“We didn't hear any aircraft,” added Naw Bu, wondering whether the army used a drone in the attack.

For decades, clashes have regularly pitted the Kia against the Burmese army. Fighting has intensified since the February 2021 coup that brought the military junta to power.
