The White House is ready to send a letter to the executives of the main US networks (including CNN, New York Times, Fox News, AP, CBS) to urge them "to intensify control over the House Republicans" after speaker Kevin McCarthy has launched an impeachment investigation into Joe Biden “based on lies.”

In particular, Biden's alleged involvement in his son Hunter's affairs is in the spotlight. The rumor alone, meanwhile, weakens the president a few months before he enters the heart of the campaign for the 2024 White House elections.

The letter, of which CNN obtained a draft, states that an impeachment investigation without evidence should "sound alarm bells for news organizations" and therefore media coverage requires fact-checking. In the letter, signed by Ian Sams, spokesperson for the White House legal office, the press is asked to be more clear in their coverage of the impeachment inquiry and not to fall "prey to traps".

“Covering impeachment as a trial story — Republicans say X, but the White House says Y — is a disservice to the American public who relies on the independent press to hold those in power to account for their responsibilities,” writes Sams – And in the modern media environment, where every day liars and hucksters spread misinformation and lies everywhere from Facebook to Fox, covering stories that fail to expose the illegitimacy of the claims on which House Republicans base all their actions only serves to generate confusion, create false premises in the news and obscure the truth."

Kevin McCarthy has «consolidated his role as a super-surrogate for the Trump campaign by transforming the House of Representatives into an arm of his presidential campaign», a spokesperson for the Biden-Harris presidential campaign commented yesterday. “Eleven days ago McCarthy stated unequivocally that he would not pursue an impeachment inquiry without holding a vote in the House. What has changed since then?".
