Two German police officers were injured , one seriously , in an explosion late last night near the fence of a police building in a Berlin district, police in the German capital said.

"A serious security incident occurred at the fence" of this building in the northern Berlin district of Wittenau, in which two police officers were injured, police reported on X. The two were taking part in "a routine security service," police said. "According to initial investigations, an unidentified object exploded , causing serious injuries to the officer's face and eyes," police added. The officer suffered "sonic trauma." Both officers required medical treatment.

The investigation has been handed over to the criminal police. A police spokesman spoke to AFP without providing further information on the incident, which occurred after New Year's Eve, during which 30 German law enforcement officers were injured, one of them seriously, by an illegally produced firework.

According to the latest figures released by the authorities on Wednesday, five people died accidentally during fireworks on New Year's Eve in Germany and around 400 people were arrested in the capital.
