Aleksandar Vucic declared live on television that his United Serbia party "has lost the elections." His United Serbia party will win between 100 and 105 seats, while the newly formed Student Movement will win 130. The announcement sparked widespread rejoicing in Belgrade and other cities, citing the success of the list composed of civil society candidates, most of whom have no prior political career.
The vote in Serbia comes after nearly two years of protests, sparked by the collapse of a shelter at Novi Sad station in 2024, which cost the lives of 16 people.
The protesters blamed the tragedy on widespread corruption in the country and gradually transformed their demands into a call for early elections, which Vucic finally called in early September.
Now the election results favor the movement and fail Vucic and his party. Vucic said he will now "continue the fight from the opposition" and demonstrate that the students ran an "unfair" campaign.
