Austrian Chancellor Alexander Schallenberg swore an oath in the hands of President Alexander Van der Bellen with the ritual formula.

He is the sixteenth Chancellor from the postwar period to today.

After the resignation of his predecessor Sebastian Kurz , overwhelmed by the corruption scandal, he will lead the government formed by the people's party (Oevp) and Verdi.

The 52-year-old career diplomat - divorced and father of four children -, outgoing foreign minister, will now have the delicate task of rebuilding the executive's image, heavily damaged by the affair involving Kurz.

His appointment, announced yesterday, was immediately approved by Deputy Chancellor Werner Kogler, leader of the Greens.

The new Foreign Minister, Ambassador Michael Linhart, who succeeds Schallenberg, was also sworn in to follow.

Linhart, 63, was born in Ankara, because his father was already a diplomat. During his long career he has held various important roles abroad. From 2018 he was Ambassador to Paris.
