The situation of chaos continues in Peru.

After the attempted coup that triggered harsh clashes throughout the country , the news arrives: former president Pedro Castillo will remain in prison for 18 months . This was decided by the Tribunal for Preliminary Investigations, which accepted the request of the Peruvian Attorney General. The charge is that of rebellion and attempted coup.

Castillo last December 7 had attempted to dissolve Parliament a few hours before a session in which a resolution regarding his dismissal due to "moral incapacity" should have been discussed. With 101 votes in favor, however, Castillo lost his office. Clashes thus broke out in the country between the police and supporters of the deposed leader.

The vice president of the Peruvian Republic, Dina Boluarte, who has taken the place of Castillo ad interim (and who is considered by the latter a "usurper") has condemned the actions of the former president, pointing the finger at what she defines as a " coup that aggravates the political and institutional crisis that Peruvian society will have to overcome in strict compliance with the law".

In the light of the facts, after having listened to the speeches of the prosecution and the defense, the judge Juan Carlos Checkley Soria - who in the courtroom recalled, with a speech lasting almost two hours, all the charges against Castillo - accepted the request sentence formulated by the prosecutor.

The magistrate, as reported by La Republica, then ruled that the former head of state will have to remain in prison at least until June 6, 2024. For their part, Castillo's defense has announced an appeal.
