Almost 8 thousand arrests and over 160 deaths.

This is the result of a week of protests and clashes in Kazakhstan, impacably repressed by the government.

"As of January 10, 7,989 individuals are detained by organs of the Ministry of the Interior", underlines a statement from the same ministry, published on the website of the executive led by Qasym-Jomart Toqaev.

Meanwhile, after a 5-day blackout, the Internet has resumed operation in Almaty, the largest city with 1.8 million inhabitants. The network shutdown occurred while violent clashes were taking place.

Almaty, the former capital of Kazakhstan, was almost completely offline since last Wednesday. Local and foreign websites are once again accessible today, declared a day of mourning following the worst unrest in the independent history of the former Soviet republic.
