7.45 Gigawatts of power are needed to achieve ecological objectives. In Sardinia there are requests for 57.67 Gw, which would be produced by 809 plants to be built: on-shore and offshore (at sea) wind farms, but also photovoltaic. Small, large and huge. The size of the assault of renewables on the island, its wind, its sun and its landscape is all in the numbers provided by Terna, the largest operator of electricity transmission networks in Europe.

The energy giant provides a map of grid connection requests submitted to its offices. The recent update crystallizes the picture as of March 31st and to understand the extent it is necessary to analyze the context.

Terna's accompanying note explains this: «The challenging European decarbonisation objectives, with the “Fit for 55” package, impose new challenges on the electricity sector. By 2030", it is underlined, "it will be necessary to install approximately 70 GW of new renewable capacity (compared to that installed as of 31 December 2019) to cover at least 65% of electricity consumption with the energy produced from these clean energy sources ». These are the national numbers. For Sardinia the figure is precisely 7.45 Gw. But the island, with its characteristics and, above all, its mistral and its sun, are tempting. So much so that the requests for the installation of plants are eight times higher than the best wishes of Europe, which asks to focus as much as possible on renewables.

In detail, for Sardinia we are talking about connection requests for 524 photovoltaic systems (22.99 Gigawatts), 254 onshore wind farms (16.86 Gw) and 31 to place blades in the sea (for a total of 17.82 Gw) .

In the last three months, around 60 applications have been filed . And in total the proponents reached an agreement with Terna on 427 cases. Not all have received environmental approval. But these are the numbers. Huge.
