The killing of wild boar hybrids that live in the wild in the La Maddalena Archipelago National Park has restarted.

The new interventions , in the islands of Maddalena and Caprera, have been made official by an order of the mayor Fabio Lai and will last until March 31, 2023 .

The killing operations, carried out by controllers specially trained by the National Park Authority, take place by firing with a rifle , every week in rotation on the two islands , starting from Caprera, on Tuesdays and Fridays, between 15 and 21.

Last year the eradication plan was definitively approved , which lasted 5 years, with the support of the CFVA - CTA (territorial coordination for the environment), suspended during the tourist period; between winter and last spring about 400 wild boar hybrids were killed .

In the ordinance, the mayor recalls that a " state of emergency wild boars " was declared, due to their uncontrolled increase, whose presence is reported in urban areas, in the immediate vicinity of houses in the historic center, in the streets and squares, in places public, with consequent danger to public safety. The "clandestine" introduction of the wild boar hybrid took place, starting from the 1980s, through the release of some specimens on the island of Caprera. And for this reason the Park is considered an "alien species".
