The number of confirmed West Nile cases in the province of Oristano in 2025 has risen to 27. A new infection has been reported in the last few hours, while sadly, another virus-related death has also occurred.

A 65-year-old woman living in Cabras lost her life. She had other underlying conditions and was hospitalized at San Martino Hospital in Oristano, where she died yesterday from complications caused by the West Nile virus, transmitted by mosquitoes.

Meanwhile, a new case has been recorded in Gonnosnò. It's a man in his eighties, currently hospitalized at the same Oristano hospital. His condition is currently under observation.

Local Health Authority 5 has already initiated an epidemiological investigation to reconstruct the contact details and transmission routes . The area where the patient lives has also been cordoned off, with disinfection measures planned within a 200-meter radius of the affected homes.

"Once again, we remind the public, especially the elderly and vulnerable, of the importance of protecting themselves from mosquito bites, which carry the virus," said Maria Valentina Marras, director of the Department of Health and Prevention of the Local Health Authority (ASL 5).

The director reiterated the main prevention measures: avoid stagnant water in gardens and terraces—such as in pet bowls, plant pots, or paddling pools—and use mosquito nets, repellent sprays, and light-colored, covering clothing, especially in the evening and nighttime, when mosquitoes are most active.
