A new case of West Nile fever has been diagnosed in the province of Oristano . The patient is over sixty and is currently under observation at San Martino Hospital.

As usual, appropriate measures have already been implemented: the Department of Hygiene and Health Prevention of the Local Health Authority (ASL 5) has begun an epidemiological investigation and preventive measures, which include disinfecting the area where the person who contracted the virus lives by the competent authorities.

This brings the number of positive West Nile virus cases recorded in the Oristano area so far in 2026 to twenty-eight, while four people have died.

Maria Valentina Marras, Director of the Prevention Department, reminds us how important it is, even during this phase, to continue to scrupulously adopt precautions to protect ourselves from the mosquito-borne virus: "It's essential to avoid stagnant water, so empty plant saucers, change the water in pet bowls frequently, and turn containers, buckets, and paddling pools upside down," explains Dr. Marras. "But it's also crucial to protect yourself from mosquito bites by screening windows or, when outside, using repellent sprays and wearing long clothing, especially at dusk, when mosquitoes are most active."
"This new case shows us that, despite the drop in temperatures seen in recent days, the risks associated with West Nile have not yet completely disappeared. We must therefore continue to protect ourselves and the most vulnerable and elderly individuals, who are most exposed to the most severe symptoms of the disease," says Director General Grazia Cattina, who emphasizes that, in the absence of vaccines and specific therapies for humans, prevention remains the only defense against West Nile Fever.
