"The waste, which is high-intensity material, fits in 200 square meters, so honestly it could fit anywhere. But it seems absurd to me to have it shipped all the way to Sardinia."

The Minister of the Environment and Energy Security, Gilberto Pichetto Fratin, in La Maddalena for the park's 30th anniversary, thus responds to the alarms about the construction of the single repository and the technological park for the storage of nuclear waste, which were raised again after his declaration – in recent days – on the possibility that the site could also be identified in already available military areas .

"Naturally," the minister added, "we dictate procedures, and these procedures, these guidelines, will have to determine the location of the waste."

The problem, he emphasizes, "is different from waste. We produce waste every day, even in hospitals. And right now, the waste from Sardinia is going to the mainland."
