Water supplies are now exhausted for the Posada basin (Macheronis dam), for the Cedrino (Pedra and Othoni dam) and for the sub-district of the Middle Tirso Valley.

The island is thirsty, and so the Central Sardinia Reclamation Consortium, meeting this morning in its board of directors, prohibited the use of water for irrigation purposes in all three of the sub-districts under its jurisdiction.

« After a year of extreme drought we are forced to resort to this tool without any alternative - explains the president of the Consortium Ambrogio Guiso -, because essentially we have to preserve the little water left . We are talking about 3 million cubic meters in the Posada reservoir, 7 million in the Cedrino reservoir. However, it can be used for drinking purposes and for livestock watering. We cannot help but acknowledge that the rainfall that guaranteed the supply of water in our storage basins is increasingly becoming an unknown . This fact should lead us to pay more attention to long-term planning."

The lack of autumn rainfall has in fact resulted not only in a lack of supply of the resource but also in prolonged consumption throughout the autumn period , thus leading the irrigation season to cover emergency periods. The expected rainfall did not bring the necessary quantity, and if the first months of the year are stingy with rainfall, a spring of strong and inevitable restrictions awaits the agricultural world of central Sardinia. Over six thousand companies are involved, distributed respectively in the 4,300 hectares in the Cedrino district, 5,700 hectares in the Posada district and 6,400 hectares in the Media Valle del Tirso district.

An irrigation ban has been established for the Posada district. For the Cedrino and middle Tirso Valley districts, the ban on use in open fields for grasslands and grazing meadows.
