«The re-proposal of Sardinia as a nuclear waste storage site is a frontal attack that the Region and the entire Sardinian people are not willing to accept . Sardinia has already expressed itself with a no that could leave no room for doubt."

President Christian Solinas speaks following the publication - carried out by the government - of the areas suitable for the storage of nuclear waste (THE NEWS HERE) . «We will react without delay or hesitation, with every democratic tool available», continues the governor who will make «immediate contact with the top management of the Government» to ensure that «the loyal collaboration between institutions and the correctness of relations between State and Region have not been compromised."

TODDE

A chorus of no arose on the island to the publication of the map of suitable areas. Sardinia as "Italy's landfill", thunders Alessandra Todde , Campo Largo's candidate for the presidency of the Region. The eight sites on the island are «all neighboring», specifies Todde, « the Giara di Gesturi plateau which not only constitutes a very significant environmental, floristic and faunal heritage, but was also included among the sites of community interest in 1995 » .

The Government's choice, underlines the deputy, would also find strong opposition in the 2011 referendum , «when 97.13% of Sardinians rejected the possibility of hosting nuclear plants or sites for the storage of their radioactive waste . The Meloni government", he adds, "regardless of the referendum and perhaps complacent with this regional council which has been "managing" Sardinia for 5 years, has decided that our island could instead soon become a suitable place in which to deposit the radioactive waste of Italy". The protest doesn't seem to stop here: «Sardinia», concludes Todde, « is not a second-class region , and will never be the dustbin of Italy. Let's say it and shout it loudly. Once and for all".

THE DEMOCRATIC PARTY

Dario Comandini , Pd: «The Government of Giorgia Meloni, not caring about the will of the Sardinians, which through a referendum where over 97 percent of the population said no to the storage of nuclear waste on our island, has identified 8 suitable sites in Sardinia, according to her, to dispose of radioactive waste. We will oppose it, it is yet another act of defiance of our autonomy, the right-wing government sees Sardinia as a land to be colonized and used as a servitude for its own interests ."

The words of the dem deputy Silvio Lai : «The Sardinians will be able to thank the regional and national government for the Christmas gift that is about to arrive», he comments. «We don't know what the selection criteria were. Sardinia certainly said no with all its municipalities to hosting the site, preferring the alternative insertion of the Einstein Telescope . On the one hand the Government says it supports the scientific infrastructure", adds Lai, "on the other it leaves the Sardinian sites in suitable areas in a clear contrast between the two activities . The Government seems to be in total confusion with the island: it does one thing with its right hand and a different and opposite thing with its left hand. What do Solinas and his council have to say? And will the majority parliamentarians say they didn't know? Or will they have the strength to say that they will oppose the Government's indications?".

CAPPELLACCI

Strong opposition to the project also came from Forza Italia MP Ugo Cappellacci : «We were, are and always will be against the construction of a nuclear waste repository in Sardinia. Sardinia", recalls Cappellacci, who as governor had called the referendum, "has already expressed its opinion and no one dares to violate the democratically expressed will of a people . It's unfortunate", he adds, "that someone is making divisive proclamations today, even those who recently had key roles in previous national governments while the process was going on and never touched on the topic. The autonomist spirit does not turn on and off depending on the Roman majorities. It is always carried forward and consistently."

THE RED-GREENS

To the various reactions, there was also that of the regional councilor of the Red Green Alliance Laura Caddeo : «In the spring of 2022», she explains, «President Solinas reiterated his categorical, definitive and irrevocable no - his words - to any hypothesis of using the Sardinian territory for the storage of nuclear waste. We will oppose by all means, the President reiterated, towards the then "enemy" government presided over by Mario Draghi. Today, with perhaps our friend Giorgia Meloni sitting in Palazzo Chigi, on whom her re-nomination for 2024 also depends, we will be able to test Solinas' effective firmness in defense of our island." Then he comments: «On one point, however, I feel like I agree for once with the line expressed by the president of the regional council: we have already given, we are already giving. Sardinia already provides an enormous contribution to the State with military servitudes , our insular condition cannot once again become the pretext for a further penalization of the Sardinian territory".

«No thanks, we don't want nuclear waste on our island. After the inertia and disasters of recent years , the president of the Sardinian-Lega council Solinas must not expose our land for waste deposits . We expect seriousness and loyalty towards the Sardinian people", the words of the Avs deputy Francesca Ghirra .

RENATO SORU

The other candidate for the 2024 Regionals, Renato Soru , has a similar opinion: «Sardinia is laboriously seeking its own possibility of growth and long-lasting and sustainable development. The storage of nuclear waste", he underlines, "is not compatible with our interests and with our idea of the future. It is not compatible with our desire to promote healthy and quality agriculture, environmental well-being, quality of life, environmental and cultural tourism. Our no to waste is a non-negotiable, definitive issue , for which it will be worth fighting all together. Sardinia has already given. In Sardinia there is no room for new easements, there is no room for nuclear waste coming from the peninsula. Not now, not ever."

5 STAR MOVEMENT

The M5s is also against it: «Once again, in the total silence of the Region, Sardinia is identified as Italy's landfill», declares the group leader in the Regional Council Alessandro Solinas . The Five Star Movement defines the Government's decision as "very serious" and recalls that "on 7 January 2021 the Regional Council approved an agenda which reiterates the Sardinians' no and commits President Solinas and the Council to undertake every useful initiative to support the position expressed".

«We learn with deep regret – he concludes – that the commitments made have once again been disregarded by the regional government which, in these five years, has not lifted a finger to prevent Sardinia from becoming the dustbin of Italy ».

THE MAYORS

A chorus of no's which is also joined by Anci Sardinia which, remember, already in 2021 had unanimously resolved to oppose a waste deposit on the island. « For once all the Sardinian institutions have proven to be united in this battle. It is necessary to maintain unity, keep the vigilance and mobilization of the communities high , reiterate the firm no of the Sardinian autonomist institutions", reads a note signed by Alberto Urpi , president of the regional council of Anci, and Emiliano Deiana , president of Anci Sardinia..

«Sardinia, starting from the military ones, has already given in terms of easements which must actually be reduced and not increased», continues Anci, which «will support the Municipalities and communities involved».
