Tyrrhenian Link: Work begins on the controversial 480-kilometer undersea cable connecting Sicily and Sardinia.
The notice boards of the coast guard offices overseeing the areas affected by the work have been filled with ordinances for navigation safety, in anticipation of the maneuvers that will be carried out by the vessels carrying out the billion-dollar works, scheduled for completion in 2028.

On August 22nd, the Palermo Coast Guard took action: until November 30th, "the Nexans company, commissioned by Terna Rete Italia, will carry out the laying and burial of the submarine electricity transmission cable, using the naval vessel called "Aurora." All vessels must stay at least 500 meters away from the vessel, which will operate 24 hours a day. The Terrasini Maritime District Office followed suit: in this case, the "NG Worker" will be at sea.

Today it was the turn of the Cagliari Coast Guard. The Tyrrhenian Link will land at Terra Mala, on the Quartu coast. From there, the cable will continue to the countryside of Selargius, connecting the Sardinian renewables grid to the mainland. The application was submitted on July 30 by the company Poliservizi on behalf of Terna: authorization was requested to operate "from September 2 to November 30, 2025."

The ordinance establishes that «during daytime hours, the sea area in front of the

The locality of Terra Mala, falling within the municipality of Quartu Sant'Elena, extending up to 12 miles from the coast within the jurisdictional waters (...) will be involved in the laying and burial of the submarine cable through the use of underwater technical operator personnel, from the vessel Aurora

and the units named Carolina Skiff and Subteco" with various numerical indications. The protection radius is 50 meters.
