When her husband lost his balance on the escalator, she tried to catch him and fell with him. A disastrous flight inside the via Quirra market yesterday morning, with serious consequences for an elderly couple: the two tried to get up, falling three more times and risking being crushed in the final part of the escalator. Only when the security personnel managed to block the plant were they able to start rescue operations. It was some of the market operators who provided first aid to the two injured and very frightened people until the 118 ambulances arrived. The elderly were taken to hospital with a red code assigned given their age. The doctors have started all the checks and tests to exclude very serious injuries. The lady, 82 years old, suffered a head injury and was hospitalized. The 91-year-old husband escaped with some injuries and was able to return home in the evening.

I scare him

"Unfortunately, falls from the escalator are frequent," says Chicco Medda, the first to intervene to help the two elderly people. «I heard the screams and ran. They couldn't get up and I alerted the market security staff. They blocked the plant and so we were able to rescue the couple." Meanwhile, someone had notified 118. "The lady had a bad cut on her head and he was also losing blood." The two elderly people live in Is Mirrionis, near the market in via Quirra. "Something must be done because that staircase is very dangerous because it is too steep and becomes a danger: we must not forget that mostly elderly people come here."

The interventions

And if you can use the escalator to go up, being careful, to go down you have to use the normal stairs. There is a freight elevator because the elevator is broken. And general maintenance would be needed for an old structure. Outside there are street vendors and this area should be the subject of redevelopment. It should because nothing more is known about the project presented some time ago by the Municipality: the works, lasting five-six months, should have finished in December. That's what it was said. Instead they haven't even started. And whoever works here has no information.
