"In Olbia, Vasco Rossi attracts more spectators than Sant'Efisio does in Cagliari." The data, even if they are only forecasts , highlights this: a major event can bring tourists and spectators from all over Italy and beyond. Thus, major events and improved connections to and from the island could represent the solution to relaunching a 2026 that, for the non-hotel sector in Cagliari, appears anything but positive . Maurizio Battelli , president of the Extra association, is certain of this and – analyzing the sector's data in the capital – reports a very worrying situation . Because while the island can always boast significant numbers during the summer season, the winter months are especially alarming, with a collapse in bookings and revenue, which in February 2025 recorded a 21% drop compared to 2024 .
"At first glance , 2025 closes with a 1.65% drop in total revenue and a 4.44% drop in nights sold compared to 2024. Some might say this is a physiological trend. But the real alarm bells ring when we analyze the month-by-month trend . From May 2025 to today, we've been witnessing a constant hemorrhage: there hasn't been a single month with a positive sign ," explains Battelli. The data worsens further if we look at the winter, which in Cagliari was described by the president himself as "terrifying." December 2025 saw a 15.27% drop in revenue and almost 14% fewer nights sold. The start of 2026 was even harsher: "January plummeted with a 37.57% drop in revenue and a 29.98% drop in average rates. Translated? Prices are being drastically lowered in order to fill the rooms, but there are simply no tourists."
Forecasts for the next three months aren't helping to brighten the picture: over the next 90 days, the sector has seen a 12% drop in bookings compared to the same period last year . The outlook for early autumn, however, is different: between September and October, projections indicate a 22% growth , numbers that could breathe new life into the sector. The data for Vasco Rossi's tour in Olbia provide an idea of the impact of a major event: normally, in June, the city's tourist draw is 22-23%, while this year the forecast rises to 60%. But Cagliari also experiences moments that reverse this trend: one example is the peak associated with the America's Cup, with the preliminary regatta that will see the city host the world's sailing championship.
"Numbers are currently declining in months that aren't crucial," Battelli reassures. "It would be truly worrying if the decline were to also affect the summer season." Excessive prices aren't among the "culprits." In fact, the decline in bookings is having the opposite effect, with rates drastically lowered just to fill rooms . But despite this, tourists still aren't coming. The cause, therefore, must be sought elsewhere. "Tourists aren't coming because reaching the island and getting around isn't easy," Battelli explains. Added to this is a complicated international situation, which is slowing down many departures and forcing many travelers to rearrange their vacations. "However, there could also be a positive effect for Sardinia," he concludes. "Many tourists might decide to forgo destinations like Greece or Turkey and choose the island instead."
