Provincial road 2 (two lanes from Sestu to Villamassargia, four lanes to Carbonia, two more lanes to Portoscuso) is one of the asphalt strips on the island with the most crosses and gravestones. Twelve from January to today alone, but the absence of a central guardrail in the widest stretch, suboptimal maintenance, poor signage and misleading restrictions have contributed significantly to hundreds of accidents over the years.

A long list

Sardinia is one of the regions in Italy with the least safe roads. The latest Istat report relating to 2022 highlights the greatest dangers on the state road 125 (Orientale Sarda), 131 (especially at Paulilatino where there is the at-grade intersection), also included by Aci among the five most dangerous roads in Italy; the central branch 131dcn (from Abbasanta to Olbia passing near Nuoro), the 389 which from Buddusò leads to Lanusei, the Sardinian transversal 129, the state road 196 to Villasor. But, beyond the statistics based on the number of accidents, it is enough to draw on our experience as motorists, centaurs, cyclists or drivers of heavy vehicles to add other trap roadways to the list. The state road 197, in the stretch that connects Furtei to Villamar, for example, is one of these; like the provincial road 61 from San Gavino to Villacidro (inadequate signage and poor asphalt maintenance).

The at-grade crossings

Michele Vacca, representative for Sardinia of the national association Motociclisti anonimi and of the public transport users association, adds to the list «also the provincial road 33-10m Borore-Alà dei Sardi; viale Marconi (Cagliari-Quartu) due to the amount of traffic and the absence of cycle paths; the state road 195 Sulcitana; the 554 and the 130", where there are dangerous crossroads, "roads, the latter two, for which funds have been allocated for years for safety, but everything is blocked".

Guardrails like cleavers

"It is unacceptable that Anas is spending as much as 350 million euros to remove the old guardrails and install others without a motorcyclist safety device." This applies to centaurs and those traveling by car. «Of the 25 motorcyclists who died in Sardinia last year, seven died due to the impact on the guardrail post, while two motorists died after the impact against a spire not equipped with an attenuator or a curved initial element» .
