One of the most serious road accidents in recent times in the Oristano area. Three motorcyclists died, another was injured in a collision with a Mercedes on Provincial Road 11, which runs from Paulilatino to Ula Tirso. It was July 6, 2024. Today, Prosecutor Paolo De Falco is requesting the dismissal of the case against Carlo Masala, 22, of Paulilatino, who was driving the car (represented by Gennaro Di Michele).

Lawyers Christian Stara and Marco Perra, representing the partner, daughter, parents and brother of Giovanni Melis, 32 years old, originally from Gadoni, one of the dead motorcyclists, have opposed this request. Judge Federica Fulgheri will decide on January 29th. The lawyers of the heirs of the other victims , Mario Sedda, 31 years old, and Roberto Daga (27) from Paulilatino (assisted by Franco Villa and Francesco Mele), and the lawyer Gianfranco Meloni, representing Ivano Saba, 37 years old from Paulilatino, the only surviving biker, will also be present at the hearing.
According to the consultant appointed by the Prosecutor's Office, Marco Antonio Pes, the damage found on the front left side of the car fully corresponds to that reported by Giovanni Melis' Aprilia.

The expert believes that the point of impact between the Mercedes, traveling toward Ula Tirso at approximately 85-90 kilometers per hour, and the Aprilia (which was traveling toward Paulilatino at approximately 110 kilometers per hour) occurred in the car's lane, although close to the center line. Immediately afterward, the Mercedes impacted on the right front with Daga's Kawasaki.

The car had ended up against a dry stone wall on the opposite side of the road, while the Kawasaki was pushed backward, crashing into Sedda's Honda. The expert maintains that it's impossible to determine whether Melis was overtaking; his findings indicate that he would have crossed the continuous lane line by a few centimeters. He also emphasizes that the driver (the expert appointed by his lawyer is Gian Piero Leoni), precisely because of the limited visibility caused by the bump, should have proceeded as close as possible to the right edge, whereas he should have stayed closer to the center of his lane.
This reconstruction doesn't seem to match the expert report by Luca Atzeni, the consultant appointed by Melis's family's lawyers (the other experts were Salvatore Forma, Stefano Ferrigno, and Paolo Marcialis). It would be impossible to reconstruct such a dynamic and maintain that Melis crossed the lane. Even the sole survivor, Ivano Saba, reported seeing a dark car traveling in the opposite direction to the motorcycles, then crossing lanes and impacting Sedda's Honda, which apparently caught fire. Then came the collision with the other motorcycles.
