The true guardians of the turtle, the symbolic sculpture of Balai Vicino, the volunteers Angelo Dedola and the brother-in-law, master Antonio Congiata, have restored the work that turns its gaze towards the sea. The entire community of Porto Torres together with the municipal administration thanked the craftsmen who, like every year, got up early in the morning to take care of the restoration.

They already knew where to intervene, they know the technique, the details of the intervention, a teaching received from the sculptor Benito Lazzarini, creator of the work. Originally from Syracuse, Maestro Lazzarini became Porto Torrese in all respects after moving to the city for work in 1968.

After his death, the two friends inherited his mission by taking care of the works that they restore every year in memory of the sculptor who donated his art to enrich the city.

Two sculptures created by the unforgettable Lazzarini: the Dolphin of Scogliolungo and the Turtle of Balai. The first was born, almost as a joke, on the night of April 1, 1986 but the city liked it so much that it was decided not to remove it. After a few years, the idea of the turtle was born, an example of caretta caretta like so many released in the Gulf of Asinara.
