Nuraghi to guard the territory. For millennia and in the present, against the hypothesis of building in Sardinia the single national repository for radioactive waste.

There have been many positions, unanimous and at every level: the no has been expressed by all the institutions involved, from the Region to the last of the island municipalities. But the authorization process, even if slowly, is moving forward. And before the Ministry of the Environment hangs the Scoping phase on the "Proposal for a National Map of Suitable Areas (CNAI) to host the National Repository for radioactive waste included in a Technological Park", initiated by Sogin.

The Sardinian areas taken in co-direction are Albagiara, Assolo, Usellus in the Oristano area, Mandas, Siurgus Donigala, Segariu, Villamar, Setzu, Tuili, Turri, Ussaramanna, Nurri, Ortacesus and Guasila.

The President of the Region, Alessandra Todde, at the beginning of the month requested a meeting with the Minister of the Environment and Energy Security, Pichetto Fratin, to reiterate the Sardinian opposition already expressed with official acts adopted by the Regional Council.

Then there are the documents filed under the ministerial procedure. The Municipality of Usellus produces them. «The identified areas concern the territory of Alta Marmilla, characterized by a predominantly agro-pastoral agro-ecosystem. These areas are home to numerous livestock farms that produce milk intended for processing into typical cheeses, such as Fiore Sardo DOP, Pecorino Sardo DOP and Pecorino Romano DOP. In some cases», we read, «the processing takes place directly in mini-dairies on the farm. Furthermore, high-quality meats are produced, such as the IGP Sardinian lamb».

The balance of this agricultural system, the document continues, " is the result of a harmonious interaction between man and the environment, which has allowed the conservation of soils and natural resources, avoiding invasive interventions. The native soils develop within a complex and delicate hydrographic network, not completely reported in official maps. This extends between the massifs of Monte Arci and Giara, both subject to environmental constraints."

For this reason, three of the Municipalities included in the map of suitable areas (Usellus, Albagiara and Assolo) are taking steps to rewrite the papers, so that they are taken into consideration to say no to the deposit.

But there would be other reasons against the waste: «Sardinia is notoriously a land with a thousand-year history, whose vestiges characterize the entire island, including the territories of Alta Marmilla». Where there are at least numerous archaeological sites with «high historical value and role as territorial constraints». They are: “Nuraghe Mialis, necropolis and settlement Ena S'Argiolas”, “Nuraghe Stampasìa” and “Nuraghe San Pietro”, “Montrigu Pastoris giants' tomb” and “Nuraghe Caìu”, all already constrained. And nuraghe Calapixina and Roman settlement”, for which the procedure for declaration of cultural interest has been started. Thousand-year-old monuments that would be a stone's throw from the radioactive waste of all of Italy, if the choice were to ever fall on Sardinia.
