The mayor of Porto Torres , Massimo Mulas, says he is willing to welcome the refugees from the ship of Sos Mediterranèe Ocean Viking , bound for France after having waited for days in vain to be able to dock in a safe port in Italy.

"It is my intention to make the city and the port of Porto Torres available to welcome the shipwrecked of the ship of Sos Mediterranèe Ocean Viking", declares the mayor. The problems identified by the European Commission on board the ship require an immediate solution to the emergency .

The Ocean Viking, bound for Marseille , is currently in Italian waters a few miles from the east coast of Sardinia, and is about to approach the coasts of Porto Torres .

"It is certainly not my intention to argue with anyone, let alone with the government of my country - underlines the mayor - but the city that I am honored to administer has always been and always will be a welcoming city, a port city and therefore a safe harbor for anyone ".

The Italian government has imposed a ban on NGO ships from stopping in Italian waters.
