The first room of the former Royal Museum in Piazza Indipendenza which, in the old layout, was dedicated to the prehistory of Sardinia, is now closely linked to the memory of Giovanni Lilliu. Yesterday the naming, in the presence of family members and students of the Lincei academic : «It was an important event», explains Francesco Muscolino, director of the National Archaeological Museum of Cagliari, «not only for our cultural institution, but for the whole Sardinia».
THE CEREMONY
Particularly touching was the speech of Lilliu's daughter, Cecilia, who spoke at the ceremony : «Our father was at home, very present despite his frenetic activity. He followed us, dedicated time to his family, told us what he was doing in the field of archeology but without exaggerating . He taught us to respect people and differences». So the Sardus Pater Giovanni Lilliu ideally returns to what was his home in the years, from 1943 to 1955, in which he worked in the Superintendence of Antiquities and then - subsequently - in his research work to discover the deepest roots of the Sardinian identity, fascinating memories that the professor has brought to light.
THE STUDENTS
«We have named the atrium of the Museum», argues the archaeologist Maria Antonietta Mongiu, «after another extraordinary scholar such as Doro Levi. With Giovanni Lilliu we are at the second stage of our journey to rediscover the founding fathers of the history of Sardinia».
POLITICIANS
The archaeologist who discovered the Barumini nuraghe was also a regional councilor with the Christian Democrats. "In all fields of action he acted as a politician", comments the vice president of the regional council Piero Comandini. «My political conceptions», he maintained, «are closely intertwined with my profession as an archaeologist, because politics and archeology are an inseparable unicum». According to Antonello Soro, former deputy and guarantor for the protection of personal data, "Lilliu was a refined political-cultural operator throughout his life , in connection with his interests as a scholar of Sardinia, with great rigor since the difficult years of war and post-fascist reconstruction".
