The Cagliari Coast Guard intervened in two separate medical evacuation operations in just a few hours, providing assistance to two people in mortal danger aboard a passenger ship and a merchant vessel sailing south of the island.
The first rescue operation involved a 70-year-old French passenger experiencing serious breathing difficulties aboard the MSC World Europa, sailing from Malta to Barcelona and transiting approximately 16 miles from Cagliari . The alarm raised by the cruise ship was received by the Operations Room of the 13th MRSC of the Cagliari Coast Guard, which, after consulting the International Radio Medical Center, ordered an immediate medical evacuation with the SAR patrol boat CP 320. Upon reaching the ship, the Coast Guard personnel transferred the passenger, already intubated, and urgently transported him to the port of Cagliari, where a 118 ambulance was waiting on the dock for the ride to the Santissima Trinità hospital.
A few hours later, a 55-year-old Ukrainian seafarer was rescued from severe gastrointestinal bleeding aboard the cargo ship "AS Costantina," sailing from Barcelona to the port of Pirro in Albania, approximately 35 miles southwest of Cagliari. The Cagliari Maritime Directorate dispatched the AW139 "Nemo 5" helicopter from the Decimomannu Coast Guard Helicopter Section. After reaching the ship, the helicopter recovered the seafarer by winch, assisted by a Coast Guard air rescuer. The aircraft then landed at the Brotzu Hospital in Cagliari, where the patient, with a code red, was entrusted to the care of medical personnel.
Since the beginning of the year, the Coast Guard reports, " a total of eighteen medical evacuations have already been carried out, saving as many people in grave danger of death at sea, often at considerable distances from the coast. The operations rooms under the Cagliari Maritime Directorate are institutionally responsible for search and rescue activities at sea in the central-southern part of Sardinia and coordinate the dependent air and naval apparatus, consisting of patrol boats, aircraft from the Coast Guard Helicopter Section, and personnel from the Diving Unit."
