The first baby loggerhead sea turtles hatched between last night and this morning from a nest identified on July 6th on Colostrai beach in Muravera. The hatching is still ongoing and should be complete within two or three days. The nest was reported by a swimmer who had noticed the turtle's tracks.
At that point, the staff of the Capo Carbonara Marine Protected Area (which also covers the Muravera coast) immediately took action. In collaboration with the Forestry and Environmental Protection Corps at the Villaputzu station, they secured the area and preserved the nesting site. Volunteers then monitored the area until today's hatching.
"The birth of the Caretta caretta turtles," the Muravera municipal administration emphasized in a statement, "reminds us that our coastline maintains a healthy, high-quality ecosystem. The fact that the eggs are hatching and nesting is therefore completed is proof that our coastline maintains excellent environmental parameters, in terms of low noise and light pollution, temperature, and sand quality." Only a few days earlier, other baby turtles had hatched from a previously unidentified nest. Colostrai, in short, appears to have become one of the Caretta caretta's first choices.
