After five months of construction, the Chilivani-Porto Torres railway line has been reopened. Rete Ferroviaria Italiana has completed one of the most significant investment programs in Sardinia in recent years, profoundly transforming the railway infrastructure through a comprehensive package of civil engineering, track construction, and hydrogeological mitigation projects, all implemented simultaneously along the line. A key aspect of the project was the construction of the foundation for the new artificial rockfall tunnel in Muros.

The project, co-financed by RFI and the Region, is designed to protect the railway line from rockfall from the overlying slope. Concurrently, consolidation work was carried out at the most critical points of the railway infrastructure. Specifically, in the section between Chilivani and Porto Torres, a section of approximately 490 meters of railway line was demolished and rebuilt to eliminate micro-subsidence. The project, which required an investment of approximately €4 million, increased the stability and reliability of railway operations. Additional work focused on mitigating hydrogeological instability along the sections near the Calamasciu River, in the municipality of Sassari. Reefs were constructed using large blocks of natural stone, retaining walls, and slope stabilization works, with the aim of preventing erosion and improving the hydraulic safety of the line.

The disruption to service was also used to perform routine and extraordinary maintenance on the Chilivani-Porto Torres line. 4.5 km of rails and sleepers were replaced, and the railway bed was renewed. Switches were replaced at several stations and strategic points along the line, including Scala di Giocca, Sassari, Ploaghe, and Ardara, with work also being carried out at the new Muros tunnel.

Cables were renewed at the Chilivani, Ploaghe, Scala di Giocca, and Sassari stations, as well as at the level crossings on the Ploaghe-Scala di Giocca and Sassari-Porto Torres sections. Extraordinary maintenance also included the renewal of the Electric Axle Counter Block system on the Sassari-Scala di Giocca-Ploaghe and Porto Torres-Sassari sections. Overall, approximately 45,000 meters of cable and 60 switch and level crossing machines were installed. The entire project involved a total investment of approximately €40 million and the coordinated deployment of over 100 technicians and workers distributed along the approximately 66 kilometers of line, with multiple worksites active simultaneously.
