When generosity goes beyond borders and even overcomes the difficulties of war . A bone marrow collection procedure was successfully completed , carried out in Cagliari thanks to a voluntary donor . Then a rapid transfer which then ended in Kiev, in the war-torn territories, where a Ukrainian patient benefited from the hematopoietic stem cell transplant .

The procurement of the donor and the organization of the transport of the biological material , as explained today by the ASL of Cagliari, were managed by the IBMDR registry .

THE RELAY – The request had started 3 months earlier from the Ukrainian Bone Marrow Donor Registry for a person in need of a marrow transplant who had not found a compatible donor among his family.

As always happens in these cases, the research was extended worldwide , given that the chances of finding a suitable "genetic twin" are approximately one in 100 thousand. Compatibility was found by IBMDR in a woman registered in the regional register of Sardinia, one of the regions with the highest donation rate in Italy. At that point the donor center of the Binaghi hospital of the ASL of Cagliari verified the donor's availability, certified her good health and, thanks to the woman's confirmed consent, it was possible to proceed with the sampling which was carried out at Arnas Brotzu from Cagliari.

The "relay" of solidarity then started right from the Sardinian capital: the bag containing the life-saving cells was handed over to a first courier from the Time:matters group who escorted it to the Medyka-Shehyni checkpoint, on the border between Poland and Ukraine. From here a second courier sent by the Ukrainian registry picked her up and delivered her to the Okhmatdyt hospital in Kiev, where the transplant was carried out.

«The boundaries between different states and peoples have been crossed - stated the health director of the Cagliari Local Health Authority Roberto Massazza - This is why it is essential to register in the bone marrow donor register : with a simple gesture it is possible to save the lives of many people everywhere of the world".

The Regional Bone Marrow Donor Registry of Sardinia, currently under the direction of Professor Sabrina Giglio, was created in 1987 by Professor Licinio Contu, haematologist and geneticist, with the aim of creating a register of voluntary donors who could help Sardinian patients , awaiting a transplant, who had not found a family donor.

With the birth of the Italian IBMDR Registry, the Sardinian registry became part of the network of 17 regional registries that cover the entire nation. In the 36 years of activity it has registered approximately 34,000 donors.
