About forty animals died and almost one hundred sheep were infected. These are the numbers of the blue tongue in the Oristano area : the virus has also spread here, in the territory of ASL 5.

«Situation under control», declares the director of the Animal Health Service Enrico Vacca , «we have established an area subject to restrictions where health measures will be applied to avoid the further spread of the disease».

There are 14 farms in the Oristano area where outbreaks of blue tongue have been found. So far 90 sheep have been infected and 40 animals have died . The municipalities currently affected by the spread of the blue tongue virus are Cuglieri, Seneghe, Narbolia, San Vero Milis, Riola Sardo, Baratili San Pietro, Zeddiani, Nurachi, Cabras, Terralba, Uras, San Nicolò d'Arcidano and Mogoro.

«The farms within the protection zone are subjected to intensified monitoring, control and surveillance activity by the veterinary services of ASL 5», continues Dr. Vacca, specifying that « the movements within the restriction zone are permitted as long as the animals do not show clinical signs of the disease , although it is understood that animals coming from an establishment within a 20 kilometer radius around a confirmed case of blue tongue must undergo a clinical examination by the official veterinarian within 24 hours after departure". Movements towards the remaining regional territory are instead permitted «only for the slaughterhouse, following a clinical visit» .
