Following the substantial annulment of the first-degree trial against Cardinal Angelo Becciu , decreed yesterday by the Vatican Court of Appeal, the cardinal received a message of solidarity from the bishop of Ozieri (Sassari), Corrado Melis.

"A pressing need emerges that can no longer be postponed: to shed full light on the facts. Complete clarity, free from shadows and ambiguities, capable of restoring dignity and re-establishing balance," the bishop stated in a letter published on the website and social media channels of the Diocese of Ozieri.

"The decision of the Court of Appeals of the Holy See, which found procedural errors to the point of declaring the relative nullity of the proceedings and ordering a new trial, presents itself as a strong signal. It is a reminder of the fundamental principles of law, of the dignity of the person, and of full respect for the rights of the defense," he continues.

The fact that the process must be substantially renewed, "with full access to the documents and an effective opportunity for defense, restores the necessary balance to the proceedings. This opens a new phase, which can finally allow for a complete and peaceful evaluation," Melis maintains. "As a Diocese, this decision is welcomed with deep sympathy and with a calm but sincere satisfaction. We sense that the time of truth is approaching, that what has been obscured can finally be clarified , and that what has been the source of suffering can find light and a fair evaluation," the message concludes.
