A few minutes and the sperm whale was already inside a huge box. Instead, the organization lasted two weeks with permits, authorizations and opinions from various bodies. The coastal stretch of San Giovanni di Sinis was freed this morning from the enormous carcass of the sperm whale found beached on February 28th. It will be burned in the San Nicolò d'Arcidano incineration plant.

This is how the Municipality of Cabras decided that for the disposal it will have to pay out around seven thousand euros from the municipal coffers. A mechanical vehicle arrived along the beach of San Giovanni di Sinis, a sort of mini crane which first picked up the carcass and then moved it and placed it in a huge container. A specialized company operated on site. Disposal at sea was not possible due to the presence of rocks close to the shore.

As the director of the Sinis Marine Protected Area Massimo Marras said, it is currently impossible to know whether there is a connection with the discovery of two other carcasses which occurred in Bosa and Arborea in recent days. Marras says strandings are fairly normal in winter due to storm surges carrying dead animals to the coast. Meanwhile, the mayor of Cabras Andrea Abis asks the Region to put in place a plan to deal with these emergencies. Maybe even making agreements with companies that are experts in the field. To make these requests, however, we will have to wait for the appointment of the new Councilor for the Environment by the new governor of Sardinia Alessandra Todde.
