Devrim Akcadag, 48, the German citizen of Turkish origin, was released from prison last Tuesday in Sardinia by the Digos of Sassari in execution of an international mandate issued by the Turkish authorities, who accuse him of being a PKK terrorist.

The decision was taken by the Sassari Court of Appeal, presided over by judge Marina Capitta, who accepted the request for release made by the defense lawyer, Stefano Mannironi, and granted house arrest to Akcadag, who will stay in the center of the Sardinian association against marginalization (Asce) of Selargius, in southern Sardinia.

The 48-year-old university researcher and translator, residing in Berlin, has already left the Bancali prison in Sassari to move to Selargius, where he will wait for the judges to decide on the extradition request presented by the Turkish authorities.

Devrim Akcadag had arrived in Sardinia on 31 July to spend a holiday with his minor daughter. He had been tracked down by the operators of the Digos of Sassari who, having ascertained his identity, arrested him and accompanied him to the Bancali prison.

Turkey accuses him of terrorism, in particular of being a supporter of the Kurdish workers' party, Pkk / Kck. According to the Turkish authorities, he would have given logistical support to PKK members, also collaborating in the dissemination of their political ideas. If Italy grants extradition to Turkey, Devrim Akcadag risks a sentence of up to 15 years in prison. In recent days he has declared himself unrelated to the accusations.
