Teulada mourns Pietrino Culurgioni, who passed away at the age of 108: he was the oldest man in Sardinia (while the oldest woman is Luisetta Mercalli, who turned 110 in February 2025 and is originally from Carloforte but lives in Cagliari). The funeral was held yesterday in Domus de Maria, where his body was interred in the municipal cemetery, amidst the emotional outpouring of family, friends, and the entire local community.
He had celebrated his birthday just three months ago, on July 8th, in the old family home in Capo Spartivento, where he had received visits from relatives and friends.
Grandfather Pietrino was the embodiment of a long pastoral tradition rooted in the centuries, and the last exponent of the ancient pastoral aristocracy that shaped the recent past of Teulada, Domus de Maria, and Sant'Anna Arresi. The son and grandson of goatherds, he descended from a family that, as early as the first national census of 1858, counted seven sons, all dairy farmers.
