The failed referendum for the choice of the Province in Teulada becomes a political case. The regional law of April 29th gave the administrations ten days to open to the popular consultation. But in these parts the decision has already been made and, at least for now, it will not change.
In the town on the border between Sulcis and the Metropolitan City of Cagliari, in fact, a resolution voted unanimously by the City Council in 2021 decided for the passage to Sulcis Iglesiente, but now the minority is attacking the administration for not having given the citizens back their say.
"They deliberately ignored the peremptory 10-day deadlines provided by the new regional law to communicate the will to proceed with the referendum, thus depriving citizens of the fundamental right to express themselves democratically on the choice between the Province of Sulcis and the Metropolitan City of Cagliari. A serious negligence", write the minority councilors Alessandro Serafini, Giacomo Piras, Antonello Tanas, Mauro Serra and Susanna Boi in a note.
Mayor Angelo Milia's response was not long in coming. "Regional law does not allow the Municipality of Teulada to participate in the regional referendum precisely because the City Council of the time - unanimously - voted to pass from the Metropolitan City to the future Province of Sulcis Iglesiente, without providing for the direct involvement of citizens. In light of these facts, accusing the current administration of not wanting the referendum is not only unfounded, but also paradoxical, considering that the impossibility of participating arises from a very specific political choice made in 2021".
