Ten scholarships of €12,000 each, intended for young residents of the Gaza Strip, will be offered by the Universities of Cagliari and Sassari , five for each institution. This is what is envisaged by a resolution of the Regional Council , based on a proposal from Education Councilor Ilaria Portas . "This way," Portas explained, "we offer young people the opportunity to begin or complete their education thanks to the support of Sardinian universities ."
The resolution allocates resources from the Global Fund called "Regional Interventions for Universities," governed by Regional Law No. 26 of 1996, as amended by Law No. 5/2015. The ten scholarships are therefore intended for students residing in Gaza, identified as part of the "Joint Educational Humanitarian Project – Urgent Measures for the Issuance of Visas, the Establishment of Educational Humanitarian Corridors, and the Integrated Reception of Palestinian Students Trapped in Gaza," in collaboration with the Gaza Students Beyond Borders association.
"This is a particularly painful moment. Gaza," Councilor Portas continues, "is experiencing a chapter in its history and terrible violence. None of us would have wanted to find ourselves faced with all this, so dramatically helpless. Faced with the embarrassment and difficulty of trying to do something for these people, not even a small gesture, we then thought about the future of these young people. And their future can only depend on completing their studies. We have therefore implemented this measure, and now all that remains is to wait for the boys and girls of Gaza to reach us through the humanitarian corridors."
The remaining portion of the overall allocation set by the Council—€43.35 million for the three-year period 2025-2027, increased by an additional €17 million each year—will be used to cover the costs incurred by the two Sardinian universities for teaching staff. Subsequently, the resources will also be used to pay other teaching staff (contract professors, tutors, teaching managers, lecturers) and to fund staff assigned to student support services, such as administration offices, libraries, SIA (Italian University Institute for the Study of Italian Language and Culture), student mobility, orientation, and psychological support.
