Nearly one million vehicles in Sardinia could benefit from the abolition of the road tax decided by the Council of Ministers for 2027.

Yesterday, the Government explained that the measure applies to small and medium-powered vehicles (up to 80 kW), those mostly used by families for daily travel.

Nationally, the measure – which also applies to all motorcycles – affects over 70% of cars currently on the road, approximately 14.5 million vehicles overall.

In Sardinia, there are expected to be approximately 800,000 cars exempt from the tax. According to ACI data, the island has:

  • 113,200 cars up to 40 kW
  • 377,345 cars between 41 and 55 kW
  • 190,654 cars between 56 and 70 kW
  • 194,952 cars between 71 and 85 kW (the abolition, as mentioned, stops at 80 kW)

As for two-wheelers (which will all benefit from the abolition without distinction of engine size), according to ACI data , approximately 150 thousand motorcycles (149,022 to be precise) are registered on the island.

The provision specifies that the same owner can avail of the measure only once.

The cost will be 2.3 billion euros , all borne by the State because the Government has assured that the burden for the Regions will be offset thanks to coverage provided by "NRRP savings".

"Others talk about a wealth tax, we are abolishing the most hated property tax," said Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni , expressing satisfaction with the measure, in agreement with all the centre-right exponents.

The opposition, however, has taken a different approach, criticizing the use of funds earmarked for the National Recovery and Resilience Plan (NRRP) for what they call "a shameless electoral maneuver."
