Around fifty students were called to class without being able to use the restrooms. This is what sparked the protest this morning at the Sant'Ignazio University campus on Via Nicolodi in Cagliari. Third-year Law students, from both odd and even-numbered groups, decided not to attend class, denouncing a situation of discomfort that, they say, has been going on for some time.
" This is a problem that has been going on for far too long ," said Alessandro Frau Erriu, Jaime Porru Asunis, and Matilde Auriemma , three students who reported the incident. In the previous days, they explained, over a hundred university students had only one bathroom available. By Wednesday, the situation had worsened further, to the point of complete absence of usable restrooms.
But the complaints aren't just about the bathrooms. Throughout the campus, there's litter, bottles, paper, and materials left on the floor. Adding to these problems is the presence of a construction site right next to the classroom where classes are held. The scaffolding is right up against the windows, and the noise from the construction, according to students, makes it difficult to follow the teachers' explanations.
The issue of safety also remains unresolved. Students report incidents of harassment and the presence of strangers spending the night near university buildings. A evacuation sign has also been posted in the area, the intended recipients of which are still unclear. According to the students, some professors had started evening classes earlier, before 8:00 PM, to allow female students, in particular, to reach public transportation more easily. Classes for other courses had been moved or canceled, the university staff reported. Third-year students remained scheduled, but the students decided to stay.
" Unheard of and unacceptable conditions ," their complaint reads. They demand a return to classes in a decent environment, with functioning services, and without the constant disruptions reported in recent weeks.
