Organizing the administrations that work on the Tavolara-Punta Coda Cavallo Marine Protected Area was the theme of the meeting, held this morning aboard the MV CP 273 patrol boat of the Olbia Coast Guard, between the new president of the institution, Massimo Canu, the Maritime Director of Northern Sardinia, Giorgio Castronuovo, and the Regional Councilor for the environment, Marco Porcu.
A work of tightrope walkers, between sustainability and usability of the environment, which has to deal with the wishes of a "user" with constantly growing numbers.
Between 15 and 20 percent more arrivals recorded in the North East of the Island (and an ever higher number of boaters) meant a lot of work by the Coast Guard . «This summer, until today, we have raised a large number of administrative reports in the area subject to protection, an approximate calculation tells us of penalties for 50,000 euros. We are not pleased - explained the Maritime Director Castronuovo - but it is symptomatic that the Coast Guard is keen to protect this precious environment, with a very delicate ecosystem, and does so in close collaboration with the managing body". The Region will make available all the tools and resources so that the management of the Marine Protected Area of Tavolara - Punta Coda Cavallo can continue its protection work.
«After the administrative stalemate, today there are all the organizational prerequisites for working in harmony with those who have to intervene; both in terms of control and in terms of ideas and programming. It is essential that everyone collaborates for the protection of an important and valuable area but also for its tourist exploitation, always in a controlled and balanced environment from the point of view of the environmental aspect - declared the Councilor. – To do this, it is necessary to study the area's capacity limits and find solutions».
THE MEASURES - Among the measures put in place by the Coast Guard, a directive (born from an agreement stipulated at a central level between the Ministry of the Environment and the General Command) issued by the Maritime Director Castronuovo and addressed to the dependent offices to find a dialogue with local authorities and operators, with a view to prevention and dialogue. «This year there has been an increase in jet skis which in some cases have violated the regulations; they often travel aboard mega yachts, which are suddenly put into the sea - the Director underlined - it is easy to understand how difficult it is to catch these subjects in the act".
COLLABORATION – Among the future projects of the Marine Protected Area, a collaboration with the Milano Bicocca University which will establish a relationship between the sea of Tavolara and the Caribbean. "We are second to none from the point of view of research, quality and tourism development and I would like to remind you - the current President in office underlined - that only a few months ago the CNR pointed out, in a hearing in the Chamber, that the trend Gallura and Costa Smeralda have been so attractive this year as to develop a 40% increase in presences compared to the average of coastal cities which at a national level was 20%. This means that we are all responsible for what will happen thinking that all this should not be commodified but protected and valued".
«I would like to say - Canu said - that I believe the sanctioning aspect is as important as it is fundamental for us to make people understand that the environment is ours. The projection of the Marine Protected Area will always be aimed in this direction, so that, beyond the presence of the Captaincy, a person knows, according to conscience and prior information, what is lawful to do".
