Another seizure of sea urchins by the Coast Guard of Porto Torres, six hundred specimens found on Isola Piana in the municipality of Stintino, coming from illegal sport fishing. The operation was concluded this morning, as part of the ordinary surveillance activity of the coast of jurisdiction, during the patrolling of the stretch of sea between La Pelosa beach and Isola Piana.

The soldiers of the Turritana Captaincy, on the recommendation of personnel of the Baracella di Stintino company who had noticed suspicious movements on the island, following a special inspection, found two baskets full of sea urchins together with the cleaning and jar packaging equipment. It was not possible to trace those responsible for the illegal fishing, who disappeared at the sight of the arriving patrol boat, leaving all the equipment and sea urchins on the spot.

A part of the catch was already processed and the relative sea urchin roe packed in 2 glass jars. Another 600 specimens, still inside the nets, were found to be alive and, therefore, in compliance with current legislation for the protection of the marine ecosystem, they were released into the sea, in a site other than that of the discovery.

The checks on the coast of jurisdiction and on the entire fish chain to protect the resource and the consumer will continue in the next few days by the Coast Guard personnel. The commander of the harbor master's office, Gabriele Peschiulli, in recalling that sport fishing for sea urchins is prohibited, invites all consumers "to purchase fish products only and exclusively from authorized dealers, able to certify their origin from professional activities according to the regulations in force on fishing and food and consequently also suitable for guaranteeing the pertinent wholesomeness for the benefit of the final consumer".
