Spargi, the nautical operators: «If 6 thousand tourists disembark every day it is not the fault of the wild boars»

"Certainly the ungulates should not have been slaughtered, but the issue goes much further than wild boars." The Association of Nautical Operators of North-East Sardinia also takes a position on the case that broke out last August 18 when on the island of Spargi, in the La Maddalena archipelago, a wild boar attacked a 9-year-old boy , an episode that then led to the slaughter of the animals.
"In reality, tourists - despite it being forbidden - unconsciously feed the wild boars of Spargi everything, even ice cream", explains Claudio Denzi, president of the Association that includes around a hundred operators located mostly in the northern part of the island and who are characterized by promoting sustainable boating.
"On an island like Spargi, about 6,000 tourists disembark every day, carrying umbrellas, bags, shoes, food, cigarettes and everything else. An army of feet that mill everything. People who have no rules also because there is no control. And the most reckless feed the wild boars to take a selfie", continues the association in a note. Adding: "If all this is allowed, it is certainly not the fault of the wild boars. The attack on that innocent child is nothing more than the chronicle of an accident foretold" claims President Denzi who, like the animal rights associations, immediately took a stand against the slaughter of the wild boars that live on the islet".
The problem, in short, for the association «is instead linked to a form of tourism that is no longer sustainable, with polluting means that end up transporting thousands of people: the disappearance of these beaches due to human causes is therefore only a question of time, as the National Research Council also indicated in a 2017 report. Also because each person who disembarks removes, even unknowingly, an average of 93 grams of sand».
"To preserve the beaches of the archipelago and at the same time exercise the nautical economy - Denzi emphasizes - there is only one solution: make the beaches reachable only by swimming without anything else but a swimsuit and everyone can enjoy, for a few minutes, an uncontaminated paradise, staying on the shoreline and then returning on board. In this way not even a grain of sand is taken away, the pioneer vegetation is not trampled and no interference is made with the wild fauna leaving residues".
"We recreational operators - concludes Denzi - are willing to make this sacrifice but all other operators and even private citizens must be equally willing to do so. It is naturally unacceptable to ban landing for some categories in favor of others. And it is also clear that if there is no control it will also be useless to establish rules. In general, we should change the paradigm: where there is a Park, we should economize on the conservation of the environment and not on its exploitation".
