Not only had there been no defamation in the words of the journalist Mauro Pili towards the company "Shift Spa", on the contrary the Court also accepted the request of the defense of the former parliamentarian and condemned the civil party to pay the costs of the judgment, quantified at 3500 euros. The trial against Pili, accused of defamation for having offended the decorum of Nino Villa Santa, in his capacity as legal representative of the company, was concluded before judge Andrea Mereu, accusing him of carrying out an activity harmful to the community, writing in a post that «certainly the use of these open-air quarries (of these holes) to be covered with actual waste, in this case sewage sludge, so you can imagine everything they contain, appears truly unthinkable».
The dispute dates back to the period between 7 and 9 October 2018 when the former parliamentarian had started an information battle, alongside some concerned citizens, against a project by Shift which wanted to use a quarry in Siamaggiore to build a landfill of non-hazardous waste. Feeling defamed, the owner had filed a complaint with the lawyer Giuseppe Macciotta, also taking the form of a civil party. At the end of the trial the public prosecution asked for a fine of 1200 euros, but Mauro Pili (defended by the lawyer Maurizio Scarparo) was acquitted with the broadest formula: because the fact does not exist.
The plaintiff, however, was sentenced by the judge to pay 3592 euros in court costs.
To find out the reason for the judge's decision, you will have to wait for the reasons for the sentence in 90 days.
