The “Su Padru” municipal road, which leads from Settimo San Pietro to state road 387, collapsed in several places along its final uphill stretch before merging with the road to Monserrato and Parteolla.
The asphalt couldn't hold up to the comings and goings of mega trucks and cement mixers working on the nearby Tyrrhenian Link station, in the Selargius area, from where the double power cable that will connect Sardinia to the rest of the Italian peninsula will run.
For several weeks, large trucks have begun to frequent this stretch of country road, which had been paved for years but was clearly only capable of handling "normal" traffic. The asphalt has thus given way in several places, especially along the sides of the carriageway, creating an extremely dangerous situation.
The situation was immediately reported by the Municipality of Settimo San Pietro, and Terna began repairing, at its own expense, the sections of the road damaged by the weight of earth and concrete transport vehicles working on its construction sites on Monday.
"Terna has responded to our requests," Mayor Gigi Puddu explained. "A serious, worrying situation has arisen on the road. It's absolutely dangerous, with some cars even damaged after hitting these potholes. Fortunately, no one was injured. Terna is working on the areas where the asphalt has collapsed, digging deeper and installing materials suitable for the situation. The work should be completed by next week, with the municipal road reopening to traffic."
A statement from the Municipality states that "The local police have already issued an ordinance temporarily regulating traffic to allow for work—under the responsibility of Terna—to repair the roadbed in the Su Pardu industrial zone and up to the SS387 junction, in order to improve road safety. Specifically," the statement continues, "until the work is completed, traffic is prohibited in the section between the SS387 junction and the roundabout at the intersection with Via del Progresso."
