The Sardinia Region reiterates its categorical, definitive and irrevocable "no" to any hypothesis of use of the Sardinian territory for the storage of nuclear waste, after Sogin sent the proposed National Charter of suitable areas to the Ministry of Ecological Transition.

"We intend to reiterate in every location - says President Christian Solinas - our firm opposition not only to the original project, which included 14 storage sites in Sardinia, but also to any form of remodeling of the map that includes our island. And we will do it. in an ever stronger way, with every democratic means, even in this phase of the procedure, which, after the national seminar held in recent months, now envisages a new phase of public confrontation ".

The governor recalls that, "to support the reasons for Sardinia's position also in the technical-scientific field", "a technical-scientific committee was set up which transmitted its arguments a year ago. The inappropriateness of such a choice is evident, which in addition to representing a danger to the image of our island, would clash with what is established by law and as a result of a popular referendum ”.

The State therefore “must respect the will expressed by Sardinia at the popular and institutional level. In 2011, on the occasion of the referendum, over 97% of the Sardinian people voted against the location of waste on the island. Even the Regional Council, at various stages, has clearly ruled against it ”.

Sardinia, President Solinas recalls, “hosts more than half of the military servants present in Italy, about 65%, to the detriment of the enhancement of the island's territory. According to the constitutive treaties of the European Union, the island territories should be supported and helped, as they are objectively disadvantaged compared to the others in some respects. It is also for this reason that the possible location of the Deposit on the Island would appear as yet another and unreasonable sacrifice imposed on the territory, which already bears a greater load than that of any other region of Italy ".

The unreasonableness of a possible decision is evident. The risks, in the event of an accident, would be enormously increased by the impossibility for the population to be effectively and quickly evacuated from the affected areas. The further aspect to consider concerns the peculiar characteristic of the Sardinian water system. For reasons related to the fight against drought, the system is highly integrated. Consequently, any accidental event could quickly compromise the entire regional water reserve ".

Also as regards “the risk and the hydraulic geomorphological hazard of any degree and the river belts, on the basis of updated data, landslide risks are much more widespread than those assessed by Sogin. All the APIs are intensely affected by the minor hydrographic network where frequent failures are concentrated; as far as the outcropping piezometric levels are concerned, almost all the bees have surface water tables and involve highly vulnerable aquifers. Furthermore, no area among those identified is able to guarantee the needs of isolation from anthropogenic infrastructures and human activities. Furthermore, all areas present a high or even very high archaeological risk, many of them impacting areas burdened by civic uses and on significant or strategic critical infrastructures ".

"Our firm and motivated opposition is therefore irrevocable - he concludes - and we will re-propose it in every location, ready to ensure that the Region promotes a strong popular mobilization that involves the entire Sardinian society".
